More details

The Rolex Air-King reference 5500 is one of the brand’s most quietly respected models — a watch defined not by complication or status, but by proportion, simplicity, and longevity. It represents Rolex at its most restrained, and for many collectors, that is exactly the appeal.

This example dates to 1987, confirmed by its R-serial number, placing it among the later production Air-Kings before the model transitioned into more modern interpretations. These later examples strike a particularly attractive balance: vintage in character, yet robust enough to be enjoyed as an everyday watch.

At 34mm, the case wears exactly as a classic Rolex should — slim, balanced, and comfortable on the wrist. The smooth bezel and black dial keep the design clean and timeless, allowing the watch to work effortlessly across a wide range of settings.

The watch is presented in stunning overall condition for its age. The case remains well defined, the bracelet is strong, and importantly it is supplied with full bracelet links, something that is becoming increasingly uncommon on vintage Air-Kings.

Condition

The watch presents extremely well overall. The acrylic crystal shows a few light hairline marks, consistent with age and normal wear for the period. A brand-new replacement Air-King acrylic crystal will be supplied with the watch.

Service & documentation

A particularly strong point of this example is its official Rolex service history. The watch was serviced by the Rolex Service Centre on 31 August 2010 and is accompanied by both the original Rolex International Service Guarantee card and the original paper service invoice, matching the watch.

This level of documentation adds genuine reassurance and provenance and is something collectors increasingly value when buying vintage Rolex.

Final thoughts

The Air-King ref. 5500 is a reminder of what Rolex does best: timeless design, mechanical reliability, and watches built to be worn. It’s understated, versatile, and quietly confident — a piece that rewards those who appreciate the fundamentals rather than the hype.

This is a particularly honest and well-kept example, offered with service history, documentation, full links, and thoughtful completeness.
