Rolex Explorer II 16570 Black Dial — Neo-Vintage 40mm Explorer II

The Rolex Explorer II reference 16570 has quietly become one of the most compelling neo-vintage Rolex sports watches. Produced from 1989 until 2011, it sits in a sweet spot in the brand’s history — modern enough to wear every day without worry, but still carrying the proportions and character of the earlier Rolex tool watches.

Originally developed for explorers working in environments where daylight isn’t always visible, the Explorer II features a fixed 24-hour bezel and GMT hand, allowing the wearer to distinguish between day and night or track a second time zone. It’s powered by the dependable Rolex calibre 3185, a movement known for its durability and simplicity.

But the reason this reference is something that’s actively sought out for stock at Calibre Club is much simpler than the technical story.

In the current Rolex landscape, it’s hard to think of a sports model that represents better value than the Explorer II 16570. The case proportions are excellent — a classic 40mm size with relatively slim lugs and a comfortable profile that still feels very close to the vintage Explorer models that came before it, while being robust enough for modern everyday use.

In many ways it’s also a bit of an insider’s choice. Most people automatically gravitate toward the GMT-Master, but mechanically the watches serve a very similar purpose. The Explorer II simply does it in a quieter, more understated way — and that’s exactly part of the appeal.

This example dates to circa 2005 (F-serial) and features the classic black dial configuration. While the white “Polar” dial often gets more attention, the black dial arguably makes the Explorer II the perfect everyday Rolex — versatile, understated and easy to wear with almost anything.

It’s the sort of watch that looks equally at home exploring outdoors, skiing in the mountains, travelling, sitting by a pool, or paired with a jacket in the evening. Few watches manage to feel this adaptable.

Condition on this particular watch is genuinely exceptional for its age. When it arrived into stock it remained in remarkably original condition and had not previously been refinished. It has since received only a very light professional freshen, preserving the strong case lines and overall integrity of the watch.

Notably, the watch still retains its original caseback sticker, something rarely seen on watches of this era and a good indication of how well it has been looked after over the years.

The watch also comes complete with its original box and papers, along with both swing tags including the white serial tag, the clear bezel protector, and full bracelet links — essentially everything that would have accompanied the watch when it left the retailer in 2005.

Examples like this — complete, carefully preserved, and clearly well-looked-after — are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

For anyone looking for a really strong example of the Rolex Explorer II 16570, this is exactly the sort of watch that tends to disappear quickly into long-term collections.
