More details
The Rolex Daytona ref. 16520, launched in 1988, marked a turning point in the Daytona’s history as the first automatic version of the model. Inside beats the Calibre 4030, a heavily re-engineered Zenith El Primero movement that Rolex modified with over 200 changes for improved reliability and accuracy. Produced until 2000, the “Zenith Era” Daytonas are now regarded as some of the most collectible modern references, bridging the hand-wound vintage Daytonas and the later fully in-house 116520.
This U-serial example dates to 1997 and features the highly desirable white “Panda” dial, with its crisp white surface contrasted by black sub-dial rings. The red “Daytona” script above the 6 o’clock register adds a distinctive detail to the design. The 40 mm stainless steel case introduces modern touches such as sapphire crystal and crown guards, while retaining the balanced proportions that have made the Daytona one of the most iconic chronographs of all time.
The watch is offered in very good overall condition. The case remains strong with defined edges, and the dial is clean with excellent colour and balance. The Oyster bracelet shows light stretch consistent with age, and the clasp remains secure with the safety lock closing tightly as intended, with only minor wear to the folding section — a common trait on examples from this era.
As one of the most sought-after chronographs of the 1990s, the reference 16520 “Panda” is a cornerstone in the Daytona lineage — both historically important and highly collectible, with enduring appeal for enthusiasts and serious collectors alike.
