More details
The Rolex Daytona needs little introduction, but certain references mark particularly interesting chapters in its evolution. The ref. 116520 represents the first generation of Daytona powered by Rolex’s fully in-house chronograph movement, the calibre 4130, introduced in 2000 and remaining the backbone of the Daytona until the ceramic era arrived in 2016.
Compared to the Zenith-powered 16520 that preceded it, the 116520 is a quieter, more refined watch mechanically. The 4130 reduced the chronograph component count by roughly 60%, improving reliability and serviceability while increasing the power reserve to around 72 hours — an impressive achievement for a column-wheel chronograph.
This particular example dates to circa 2005, part of the D-serial production run, and features the classic black dial configuration that many collectors consider the most versatile of the steel Daytonas. The contrast between the black dial and polished steel case gives the watch a slightly more understated presence compared with the white dial variant.
Condition-wise, this watch is genuinely exceptional. The case remains extremely sharp with strong lines and crisp edges, presenting far better than most examples of this era. It has clearly been very well cared for and wears almost like a much newer watch.
Importantly, the watch was serviced by Rolex at the Rolex International Service Centre on 4 February 2016, providing additional reassurance regarding the health of the movement.
For collectors looking for a clean example of the pre-ceramic steel Daytona, this is exactly the sort of watch that tends to disappear into long-term collections — honest, sharp, and mechanically robust.
A fantastic opportunity to acquire one of the most recognisable modern Rolex sports watches in outstanding condition.
